With . million people watching the pyrotechnics spectacular around the Sydney Harbour Foreshore, it was an exciting opportunity to celebrate the role of engineering and technology in creating a better world.

“The New Year’s Eve event in Sydney was truly spectacular – to be part of it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for EWB,” said Lizzie Brown, EWB CEO.

Around the Harbour EWB volunteers set up four ‘Pop Up Sites’ showcasing unique and innovative technologies that have changed the world in some way. This included a giant toilet (provided by WaterAID), arguably the greatest engineering invention in history, a solar cooker and a water pump.

EWB volunteers also ran interactive games and activities at the Lord Mayor’s Picnic, an invitation only event for children with special needs at the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens.  The children helped to build an operational wind turbine made from Lego and participated in other engineering activities.

Through EWB engineers are involved in bringing clean water to villages, developing sanitation solutions  for challenging environments and providing engineering education opportunities to local students and engineers.

“These inspiring volunteers at EWB use their time and skills to work closely with local organisations across our region, their work is improving the quality of life and having a lasting, positive impact on many communities” the Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
